Andreas Schmidt & Friends

Andreas Schmidt (* 1967 in Berlin) ist ein deutscher Pianist, Komponist und Arrangeur.

Seit seinem 13. Lebensjahr nahm er Klavierunterricht und später für mehrere Jahre eine zusätzliche Saxofonausbildung. Seine Klavierlehrer Aki Takase (Japan) und Walter Norris (USA) ermutigten ihn, sich schon vor dem Studium ganz dem Jazzpiano, Komponieren und Arrangieren zu widmen. Es folgten Auftritte in Fernsehproduktionen und Konzerte in Deutschland. Von 1993 bis 1998 studierte Schmidt an der Jazzabteilung der Hochschule der Künste Berlin.

Aufmerksamkeit erregte Andreas Schmidt als junger Jazzpianist mit der CD Haiku, die er mit dem Quartett, bestehend aus Jerry Granelli (Schlagzeug), Rudi Mahall (Bassklarinette), Lee Konitz und Schmidt, einspielte, und für die er alle Stücke komponierte. 1995 erhielt Andreas Schmidt ein Kompositionsstipendium des Berliner Senats, verbrachte sechs Monate in New York City und arbeitete dort gemeinsam mit Jim Black, Jane Ira Bloom, D. D. Jackson, Susie Ibarra und Joe Fiedler. Dort begegnete er auch erstmals dem Pianisten Paul Bley, der ihn zu einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bassisten Gary Peacock motivierte. Als gemeinsames Projekt entstand die CD berlin, 1999.

Andreas Schmidt (* 1967 in Berlin) is a German pianist, composer and arranger.

He took piano lessons from the age of 13 and later additional saxophone training for several years. His piano teachers Aki Takase (Japan) and Walter Norris (USA) encouraged him to devote himself entirely to jazz piano, composing and arranging even before his studies. Performances in television productions and concerts in Germany followed. From 1993 to 1998 Schmidt studied at the Jazz Department of the Berlin University of the Arts.

Andreas Schmidt attracted attention as a young jazz pianist with the CD Haiku, which he recorded with the quartet consisting of Jerry Granelli (drums), Rudi Mahall (bass clarinet), Lee Konitz and Schmidt, and for which he composed all the pieces. In 1995 Andreas Schmidt received a composition scholarship from the Berlin Senate, spent six months in New York City and worked there together with Jim Black, Jane Ira Bloom, D. D. Jackson, Susie Ibarra and Joe Fiedler. There he also met the pianist Paul Bley for the first time, who motivated him to collaborate with the bassist Gary Peacock. The CD berlin, 1999, was produced as a joint project.
