Wooli / 無理 / 우리 is an avant-garde folk duo formed by Taiwanese pipa player Fan-Qi Wu and Norwegian drummer Michael Lee Sørenmo. Since their debut in Oslo in April 2024, the duo has performed across Europe at festivals such as Aarhus Jazz Festival, Vestafor Festival, Babel Sound Festival, and (s)Nodi Festival. Their first album is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2026.

Wooli draws inspiration from East Asian traditional and folk music and the expressive freedom of free jazz. At the heart of the project is a desire to reinterpret and transform cultural heritage, engaging with tradition not as a fixed form but as a living, evolving force. Their music is shaped through improvisation, real-time dialogue, and a shared curiosity for sound. Often described as „a new invention,“ Wooli’s work challenges genre boundaries and offers a fresh sonic language—at once rooted and radically new.

Mit ihrer ersten EP, die im Januar erschienen ist, stellt sich GROUNDING, das neue Projekt des Saxophonisten Fabian Deschler vor – ein Quartett, das den Dialog zwischen Konkretem und Abstraktem auf innovative und zugängliche Weise gestaltet.
Die Band bewegt sich in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen zeitgenössischem und avantgardistischem Jazz. Prägnante Melodien entwickeln sich zu experimentellen Klängen, von energisch roh bis ruhig und introspektiv. Dabei bleiben die Musiker stets geerdet, was nicht nur als Hommage an ihren Namen, sondern als Grundsatz ihrer musikalischen Identität verstanden werden kann.

With their first EP, released in January, GROUNDING, the new project by saxophonist Fabian Deschler, introduces itself—a quartet that shapes the dialogue between the concrete and the abstract in an innovative and accessible way.
The band moves in a field of tension between contemporary and avant-garde jazz. Concise melodies develop into experimental sounds, ranging from energetically raw to calm and introspective. The musicians always remain grounded, which can be understood not only as a tribute to their name, but also as a principle of their musical identity.
