Diego Piñera ist ein international renommierter Schlagzeuger und Komponist mit deutsch-uruguayischer Herkunft. Geboren 1981 in Montevideo, lebt er seit 2013 in Berlin. Seine musikalische Ausbildung absolvierte er am Berklee College of Music (USA), an der Universität für Musik in Havanna (Kuba) sowie an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig. Piñera kombiniert in seiner Musik die rhythmische Vielfalt seiner lateinamerikanischen Wurzeln mit dem kreativen Freiheitsdrang des Berliner Jazz und der Energie der New Yorker Szene. Odd Wisdom: Ein Album, das Piñeras Kompositionen mit internationalen Jazzgrößen wie Donny McCaslin (Saxophon), Ben Monder (Gitarre) und Scott Colley (Bass) vereint. Das Werk wurde 2021 für einen GRAMMY nominiert.
Berlin Odd Wisdom: Eine Berliner Formation, die Piñeras Konzept aufgreift und mit Musikern wie Peter Ehwald (Saxophon), Igor Osipov (Gitarre) und Marcel Krömer (Bass) umsetzt.

Pineras Begegnungen mit lateinamerikanischer Musik und mit dem Jazz in seiner ganzen Bandbreite haben ihn dazu gebracht, einen unverwechselbaren Stil zu entwickeln. Durch die Verbindung seines avancierten Rhythmusverständnisses mit einem lateinamerikanisch angehauchten Jazz-Sound und der Freiheit der Improvisation kommt sein starker Charakter lebendig zum Ausdruck. In Pineras Kompositionen finden sich musikalische Komplexität und Virtuosität in Hülle und Fülle, durchdrungen von großer Subtilität und seiner Vorliebe für ungerade Metrum-Grooves. In Uruguay nahm er mit dem Diego Pinera Trio das Album „Buscando“ unter dem Label Perro Andaluz auf. Zurück in Deutschland gründete er das Berlin Quartet und veröffentlichte 2010 „Reflexiones“ mit Tony Lakatos. 2014 folgte die Jazz Thing Next Generation Serie „Strange Ways“. Im Mai 2016 ging er auf CD-Release-Tour für „My Picture“ mit Donny McCaslin und Phil Donkin.

Diego Pinera was born 1981 in Montevideo, Uruguay and has lived in Germany since 2003. He studied drumming at the Berklee College of Music (USA), at the University of Music in Havana (Cuba) and at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig (Germany).

Pinera’s encounters with Latin American music, and with jazz in all its breadth, have led him to develop an unmistakable style. Through the combination of his advanced conception of rhythm, a jazz sound with a Latin touch, and the freedom of improvisation his strong character comes across vividly. In Pinera´s compositions there is musical complexity and virtuosity in abundance imbued with great subtlety and his love to odd meter grooves. In Uruguay he recorded with the Diego Pinera Trio the album “Buscando” under the Perro Andaluz label. Back in Germany he founded the Berlin Quartet and released in 2010 “Reflexiones” featuring Tony Lakatos. In 2014 the Jazz Thing Next Generation Series “Strange Ways” followed.
