Branford Marsalis auf den Spuren Keith Jarretts – wie schon auf den Spuren der Love Supreme von John Coltrane in 2003 handelt es sich bei der Aufnahme Belonging um ein fast schon werkgetreue Huldigung mit allerdings genügend Spielraum zur Interpretation. Belonging von Keith Jarrett ist aus dem Jahr 1974. Gut 50 Jahre her. Branford Marsalis, Jahrgang 1960, wird das Original als Jugendlicher gehört haben und so liegt die Vermutung nah, dass er sich einen Wunsch aus der Zeit mit viel Heiterkeit, mit großer Empathie und mit virtuoser wie spielfreudiger Umsetzung erfüllen wollte – im Sinn eines Long As You Know You’re Living Yours – was so viel heißen mag wie: solange du weißt, dass du dein eigenes Leben lebst – darfst du dich auch verneigen und bedanken für große Werke. Und sie mit eigener Phrasierung und eigenem Witz mitnehmen, und wenn schon der Guardian davon ausgeht, das auch Keith Jarrett, der seit 2018 nicht mehr auftreten kann, seine wahre Freude an dieser Aufnahme haben wird, kann es niemanden verwundern, dass das Konzert im RBB Sendesaal bereits nahezu ausverkauft ist.

Branford Marsalis on the trail of Keith Jarrett – as on the trail of John Coltrane’s Love Supreme in 2003, the recording Belonging is an almost faithful homage to the work, albeit with plenty of scope for interpretation. Belonging by Keith Jarrett was recorded in 1974, a good 50 years ago. Branford Marsalis, born in 1960, will have heard the original as a teenager and so it is reasonable to assume that he wanted to fulfill a wish from that time with a lot of cheerfulness, great empathy and with virtuoso and joyful playing – in the sense of Long As You Know You’re Living Yours – which may mean as much as: as long as you know that you are living your own life – you may also bow down and give thanks for great works. And take them with your own phrasing and wit, and if the Guardian assumes that even Keith Jarrett, who has been unable to perform since 2018, will really enjoy this recording, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the concert in the RBB Sendesaal is already almost sold out.
