Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq ist ein versierter Saxophonist, Flötist, Klarinettist, Komponist und Bandleader, dessen musikalischer Weg sich über mehrere Jahrzehnte und Kontinente erstreckt. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, begann er seine musikalische Karriere im Alter von 6 Jahren als Solist im Jugendchor seiner Kirche. Seine Mutter führte ihn im Alter von 8 Jahren in die Klarinette ein, und mit 10 und 11 Jahren nahm er als erster Klarinettist des Los Angeles Unified All City Elementary School Honor Orchestra LPs auf. Fuasi erwarb einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Soziologie am Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Nach seinem Abschluss 1972 studierte er unter der Mentorschaft des verstorbenen afroamerikanischen Pianisten Horace Tapscott an der Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA) in Los Angeles. Diese Erfahrung führte zu einer lebenslangen Zusammenarbeit mit Tapscotts Pan-African People’s Arkestra (PAPA), wo Fuasi als Assistenzdirigent, Arrangeur, Komponist und Kopist tätig war und Saxophon, Klarinette und Flöte spielte. 1991 zog Fuasi nach Berlin, wo er ein fester Bestandteil der pulsierenden Jazzszene der Stadt wurde. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten unternahm er ausgedehnte Tourneen durch Europa, Asien, Afrika, den Südpazifik sowie Mittel- und Südamerika. Er leitet mehrere Ensembles, darunter Fuasi & Ensemble, The Ebony Big Band Experience, Fuasi’s Latin Jazz Connection, das Horace Tapscott Memorial Ensemble, Fumatikelo, und The Jazz Crusaders Tribute Project & Beyond. Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq is an accomplished saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, composer, and bandleader whose musical journey spans several decades and continents. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, he began his musical career at the age of 6 as a soloist in his church youth choir. His mother introduced him to the clarinet at age 8, and by 10 and 11, he was recording LPs as the first clarinetist for the Los Angeles Unified All City Elementary School Honor Orchestra. Fuasi earned a B.A. in Sociology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. After graduating in 1972, he studied under the mentorship of the late African-American pianist Horace Tapscott at the Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA) in Los Angeles. This experience led to a lifelong association with Tapscott’s Pan-African People’s Arkestra (PAPA), where Fuasi served as assistant conductor, arranger, composer, copyist, and performed on saxophone, clarinet, and flute. In 1991, Fuasi relocated to Berlin, Germany, where he became an integral part of the city’s vibrant jazz scene. Over the past three decades, he has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, and Central and South America. He leads several ensembles, including Fuasi & Ensemble, The Ebony Big Band Experience, Fuasi’s Latin Jazz Connection, the Horace Tapscott Memorial Ensemble, Fumatikelo, and The Jazz Crusaders Tribute Project & Beyond. Fuasi has had the privilege of sharing the stage with numerous jazz legends, such as Walter Bishop Jr., Jimmy Garrison, Sam Rivers, Benny Golson, Hal Singer, Rudy Stevenson, Ed Blackwell, Arthur Blythe, Joe Bowie, Sugar Blue, Abdu Salim, Omar Sosa, Kelvin Sholar, and Winard Harper, among others.
