We know from Cecile Strange that she incorporates her own life stories, experiences and adventures into her music, these are stories from family life, from her grandparents, her own daughter, her partner and her immediate neighbourhood, the new album, now her fifth, is about the beech tree, the tree of life of spring, which is celebrated in Denmark because you can even eat the first leaves from it, a tree that draws its nourishment from the light above and the roots in the ground, a metaphor for grounding and growth, for identity and stability.

The six songs wind their way around this and, in Cecilie Strange’s own meditative and touching way, tell of remote Norwegian islands (in Skrova Fyr), explain her homage to her childhood in Odense in the opening piece A Fairy Tale of a Violin, tell of her Copenhagen as a love story, of her time in New York in Walking on a Grand Street, Life in Iceland has also left its mark on On The Tip Of Solheimajökull – at her side, as on the albums Blue, Blikan and Beyond, are pianist Peter Rosendal, bassist Thommy Andersson and drummer Jakob Høyer, counterpointed by the voice of singer Josefine Cronholm, who we already know from the album Beyond as the one who complements, expands and reflects the colour spaces of Cecilie Strange’s singing saxophone with ethereal sounds.

It could just as easily be said that the remarkable April Records label has once again demonstrated its flair for innovative soundscapes and, in Danish saxophonist Cecilie Strange, has an outstanding artist at its side who, with her profound, lyrical compositions and her warm, open tenor sound, is helping to shape and enrich the Nordic jazz landscape.
