Alben werden zum Glücksfall, wenn sie dir ihre Raffinesse oder innere Konsistenz nicht gleich bekanntgeben, sondern du sie gleich noch einmal hören musst, um weitere Eigenheiten aufzunehmen – zum einen pflegt Erlend Skomsvoll einen feinfingrigen Umgang mit seinem Instrument – er nimmt dem an sich lauten Klavier seine Vordringlichkeit, er spürt zum anderen so einige Fassaden der Weltmusik auf, vom Samba, vom Tango zum Afrobeat und zieht dich einfach mit, einfach im Sinn von mitreißend oder in sich magnetisierend.

Gleich auch: wie raffiniert seine Partner am Bass und Schlagzeug agieren. Selbst das in sich zusammensinkende Stück Her Sta jeg og der star du, das als Kinderliedsolo beginnt und zur Ballade wird im Pianissimo aller Beteiligten, erfährt im Andante seines Folgestücks Film i hue eine Aufweitung von Tragik und schwerem Gang, es steigert sich im Andante Moderato und bricht ab. Auch Male tangentene dine ist eher zurückhaltend – das ändert sich in Ambivertilismer: hier ist jemand mehr, als man ihm nachsagt oder was von ihm angenommen wird – im Superlativ heiter und rhythmisch dargestellt.

Es schwingt vieles mit – in dieser Kammermusik als Film auf künstlerisch hohem Niveau.

Erlend Skomsvoll kann dabei auf ein breit aufgestelltes Gesamtwerk zurückgreifen: Seine Mitgliedschaften bei Skomsork, Wibutee oder Come Shine – seine Erfahrungen im Trondheim Orchester, das er mitunter selbst leitet und arrangiert, die Reihe der Zusammenarbeiten mit Chick Corea, Pat Metheny und Nils Peter Molvaer, im Rahmen des Elb Jazz 2023 mit Marius Neset und ein Jahr zuvor mit Mathias Eick.

Seinen Terminkalender hat er nun entrümpelt und sich vorübergehend vom Komponieren für große Orchester zurückgezogen und seine ganze Zeit und Kreativität dem Klavierspiel und der Trioarbeit gewidmet.

Ein erstes Ergebnis liegt vor. Du hörst nicht bloß ein weiteres Klaviertrio – du hörst eine umfangreiche Darstellung oder Erzählung, du hörst ein dichtes und vielschichtiges Werk im eher ruhigen Segment, aus dieser Ruhe sprudelt es mit eigener Intensität im Wechsel der unterschiedlichen Tempi – wenn es zum Beispiel wie in Gutta groovy wird auf diesem Reiseversprechen mit dem Titel Noshk Blues. Da wird aus einem schlichten Blues, vom Bass gezupft, vom Schlagzeug punktgenau vorangetrieben und vom Klavier melodiös ausgeschmückt, ein Blues der ganz eigenen Gewichtsklasse.

Erlend Fredrik Skomsvoll (geboren am 12. Mai 1969) ist ein norwegischer Jazzmusiker (Klavier, Keyboards, Akkordeon und Tuba), Bandleader, Komponist und Arrangeur, bekannt durch seine eigene Band Skomsork und die Band Wibutee mit Live Maria Roggen, Madrugada und Kaizers Orchestra. These were the words spoken by the legendary Svein Finnerud to a young Erlend Skomsvoll in 1991.

Albums become a stroke of luck when they don’t immediately reveal their sophistication or inner consistency to you, but you have to listen to them again right away to pick up further peculiarities – on the one hand, Erlend Skomsvoll cultivates a delicate handling of his instrument – he takes away the urgency of the inherently loud piano, on the other hand, he traces some of the facets of world music, from samba, tango to Afrobeat and simply pulls you along, simply in the sense of rousing or magnetising in itself.

The same goes for how cleverly his partners on bass and drums play. Even the collapsing piece Her Sta jeg og der star du, which begins as a children’s song solo and becomes a ballad in the pianissimo of all participants, experiences an expansion of tragedy and heavy gait in the andante of its follow-up piece Film i hue, it increases in the andante moderato and breaks off. Male tangentene dine is also rather restrained – this changes in Ambivertilismer: here someone is more than they are said to be or what is assumed of them – presented in the superlative, cheerful and rhythmic.

Much resonates – in this chamber music as a film at a high artistic level.

Erlend Skomsvoll can draw on a wide-ranging oeuvre: his membership of Skomsork, Wibutee and Come Shine – his experience in the Trondheim Orchestra, which he sometimes conducts and arranges himself, the series of collaborations with Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Nils Peter Molvaer, as part of Elb Jazz 2023 with Marius Neset and a year earlier with Mathias Eick.

Now, Skomsvoll has cleared his schedule, temporarily stepping away from composing for large orchestras, and dedicated all his time and creativity to piano playing and trio work.

The first result is now available. You are not just listening to another piano trio – you are listening to an extensive performance or narrative, you are listening to a dense and multi-layered work in a rather calm segment, from this calm it bubbles up with its own intensity in the alternation of different tempi – for example when it gets groovy, as in Gutta, on this travel promise entitled Noshk Blues. A simple blues, plucked by the bass, driven with pinpoint accuracy by the drums and melodiously embellished by the piano, becomes a blues in a class of its own.
