Christopher Dell – Vibraphone
Christopher Dell (*1965), Architekt, Stadtplaner und Sound-Collagist – studierte Vibraphon, Schlagzeug und Komposition in Hilversum und Rotterdam und an der Berklee School of Music, seit 2000 leitet er das Institut für Improvisationstechnologie in Berlin, kurz IFIT. Weitere Projekte sind das unter seiner Regie geführte Label ENW, die Zusammenarbeit mit Christian Lillinger und Jonas Westergaard, kurz DLW – hervorgetreten ist Christopher Dell auch durch Publikationen zur Architektur und Städteplanung. Hier die Abstraktion, das Raumgefüge, die Struktur, dort der Hinweis: Improvisation braucht Methode. Wer seine Essays und Schriften einsehen will, ist hier gut aufgehoben.
Von 2015 bis 2018 hatte er eine Vertretungsprofessur für Städtebautheorie am Lehrstuhl „Urban Design“ an der HafenCity Universität Hamburg inne. Eine Gastprofessur in diesem Fach nahm er auch an der TU München wahr. Seit 2017 lehrt Dell Städtebau und Stadterneuerung an der Universität der Künste Berlin.
Übergangslos scheinen ihm Grenzen und Linien zwischen den Disziplinen, unermüdlich bildet er sich und seine Kreise um und fort – einzusehen im fortlaufenden Journal – auch das Zusammenspiel mit Christian Ramond und Klaus Kugel ist längst erprobt und ebenso lange in der Vertiefungsphase. Nun geht es auf Tour, und wenn dabei keine weitere Aufnahmereihe entsteht, nun: es kann auf ein Gesamtwerk geblickt werden, das sucht ohnehin seinesgleichen.

Christopher Dell (*1965), architect, urban planner and sound collagist – studied vibraphone, percussion and composition in Hilversum and Rotterdam and at the Berklee School of Music, since 2000 he has been director of the Institute for Improvisation Technology in Berlin, IFIT for short. Other projects include the ENW label under his direction, the collaboration with Christian Lillinger and Jonas Westergaard, DLW for short – Christopher Dell has also made a name for himself with publications on architecture and urban planning. From 2015 to 2018, he held a deputy professorship for urban design theory at the Chair of Urban Design at HafenCity University Hamburg. He also held a guest professorship in this subject at the Technical University of Munich. Dell has been teaching urban design and urban regeneration at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2017.
Boundaries and lines between the disciplines seem to be seamless to him, he tirelessly retrains himself and his circles – to be seen in the ongoing journal – and the collaboration with Christian Ramond and Klaus Kugel has long been tried and tested and has been in the deepening phase for just as long. Now it’s time to go on tour, and if this doesn’t result in another series of recordings, well: we can look back on a body of work that is probably unrivalled.
