Tau 5 beschäftigt sich mit komplexer Rhythmik, der Verschmelzung elektronischer und akustischer Klänge und der Verbindung unterschiedlichster Stile vor dem Hintergrund der neueren Jazztradition. Ähnlich einer Rockband arbeitet Tau 5 in einem kollektiven Prozess von Komposition, Improvisation und Arrangement.

Das Berliner Quartett (sax, p, dr, bass) trifft ins Schwarze der Zeitgeist-Zielscheibe. Keine Ironie, keine Zitate, keine intellektuelle Theatralik, nur Ton und Technik.
Philipp Gropper (sax), Robert Landfermann (bass), Oliver Steidle (dr) und Elias Stemeseder (p) haben mit der Postmoderne wenig am Hut. Statt individuell, glänzen sie lieber in der Gruppe. Es geht ihnen nicht um Assoziation und Dekonstruktion, sondern um Erschaffen und Teilen. Wie altmodisch! Wie revolutionär! Der Sound von PHILM ist dicht und schnell und hat trotzdem viel Luft, er darf schweben und darf ausklingen. Er schreit einem nicht grundlos ins Gesicht. Landfermann und Steidle sind nicht einfach die Rhythmusgruppe, sie bauen stetig an einer eng verzahnten Klangmaschinerie. Gropper und Stemeseder treiben sie an, bringen sie dazu, höllisch schnell Tempo oder Temperatur zu ändern. Am Saxofon von Philipp Gropper klebt nicht der smoothe Schmalz vergangener Zeiten. Es klingt kantig, trotzdem nie kalt, denn seine motivischen Ideen sind oft von einer sphärischen Melancholie. Elias Stemeseder hat ein Händchen für seltsam entrückte und gleichzeitig eindringliche Melodien und doch kann er auch anders. Dann legt er mit elektronischen Einwürfen oder Ausflügen in Richtung Noise nochmal einen Atmosphäre-Schalter um. PHILM destilliert das klassische Quartett der 60er-Jahre: Keine Ironie, keine Zitate, keine intellektuelle Theatralik, nur Ton und Technik.

The Berlin quartet (sax, p, dr, bass) hits the bull’s eye of the Zeitgeist target. No irony, no quotes, no intellectual theatrics, just sound and technique.
Philipp Gropper (sax), Robert Landfermann (bass), Oliver Steidle (dr) and Elias Stemeseder (p) have little to do with postmodernism. Instead of playing individually, they prefer to shine as a group. They are not interested in association and deconstruction, but in creation and sharing. How old-fashioned! How revolutionary! PHILM’s sound is dense and fast and yet has plenty of air, it is allowed to float and fade away. It doesn’t scream in your face for no reason. Landfermann and Steidle are not just the rhythm section, they are constantly building a tightly meshed sound machine. Gropper and Stemeseder drive them on, making them change tempo or temperature at hellish speed. Philipp Gropper’s saxophone doesn’t have the smooth schmaltz of times gone by. It sounds edgy, yet never cold, because his motivic ideas often have a spherical melancholy. Elias Stemeseder has a knack for strangely enraptured yet haunting melodies and yet he can also do things differently. Then he flips the atmosphere switch again with electronic interjections or excursions in the direction of noise. PHILM distils the classic quartet of the 60s: no irony, no quotes, no intellectual theatrics, just sound and technology.
