Erster Satz J.E.Behrendt: „Der Jazz ist in New Orleans entstanden.“ Eine Binsenweisheit, die ebenso unpräzise ist, da in Memphis, Kansas City, in Dallas und St Louis ähnliche Spielarten entstanden. Vor dem New Orleans-Stil aber rangiert der Ragtime, eine Kompositions- Und Pianomusik – ganz ohne Improvisation. Scott Joplin, in Sedalia Missouri ansässig, zeichnet sozusagen hauptverantwortlich, sein Klavierspiel ist überliefert, ungeachtet der verschiedenen Rag-Time-Formen vom vokalen Rag-Song zum Banjo-Rag oder Rag-Walzer. Oder: dem Charleston-Rag. Rag-Time heißt übersetzt: Zerrissene Zeit.
