Das Album von 2019 mit dem Titel View of Tomorrow wagte einen Blick in die Zukunft, das Cover zeigte quirlende Wasserstoffstrukturen vor geometrischem Hintergrund, das zweite Album nun, vier Jahre später, richtet den Blick ins All, Antares heißt der Stern im Zeichen des Skorpion, das Cover verrät etwas einer glühenden und eruptiven Struktur von außen nach innen und von Implosion und Verschwinden, gesehen von innen nach außen, ein Kampf der Elemente um Vorherrschaft, Ausdauer und Überleben. Dick aufgetragen jeweils in Ölfarben, was in View of Tomorrow noch nach Landvermessung oder Geometrisierung aussah, wird in Antares zum Spiel der Elemente in- und umeinander.

Um nicht zu sehr den Spekulationen zu erliegen oder darin aufzugehen, frage ich die Musiker selbst, was sie sich unter Antares vorgestellt haben, warum nun dieses eher apokalyptische Bild, das in seiner Wirktiefe und Farbgebung ans Cover von Atomic Basie aus 1957 erinnert – eine ähnlich apokalyptisch anmutende Zeit. Jetzt, wo alle naslang einer hinter seinem Tisch hervorgekrochen kommt und die Auslöschung der Welt vorschlägt.

Im Orient Express von Uri Gurvich geht es gleich in hohem Tempo los als Erinnerung an eine Zugfahrt von Istanbul gen Westen, ein Melodien- und Rhythmen-Mix aus der Türkei, Ägypten und dem Schwarzen Meer.

Zu lesen ist von besonderen Menschen, denen Ramiro Olaciregui‘s Kompositionen CM’s Blues, Samba pra Kuki und Lotus gewidmet sind. Nahtlos geht es vom Orientexpress in den Samba über mit seinen komplexen Modulationen.

Zu lesen ist von Hoffnung, Zuversicht und Ausgeglichenheit, vom besseren Leben in der Zukunft, auch dort, wo Konflikte aufkommen, Kenneth Dahl Knudsen‘s Komposition Day One erkundet Akkordfolgen und Taktwechsel und gibt Gitarre und Saxophon Präsenzfläche.

Zu lesen ist, wie wir einem hohen Tempo des Swing aus den 60igern mit Reminiszenz an McCoy Tyner und Art Blakey beiwohnen in Marcos Merinos‘ Verás Mijín.

Bolinchas ist rhythmisch wie kompositorisch als komplexes Gegenstück zum Swing eingefügt und gibt die Vorlage für Antares, dem leuchtenden Stern im dichten Gerüst aus Passion und Leidenschaft.

Zu lesen ist von Verschmelzung, von Kontrast, von den einzigartigen Eigenschaften der Musiker, von der kreativen Natur und Einheit der Band. ¿Y Las Palabras? lenkt das Augenmerk auf Brad Mehldau, der seinerseits mit Radiohead-Anleihen die Möglichkeiten der Adaption von Pop und Rockmusik im Jazz anzeigte.

Zu lesen ist von Rodolfo Zunigas Erfahrungen in einer kleinen Schweizer Stadt, St. Sulpice soll trotz der Melancholie ein Gefühl von Offenheit und Freiheit vermitteln.

Magic Carpet von Uri Gurvich schließlich beendet die Reise meditativ, zurückhaltend und erzählt wie aus den Geschichten von Tausend und einer Nacht.

Soweit die Musiker über ihre Musik – ich kann meine Count Basie Weltuntergangsfantasie und Apokalypsebefürchtung in die Kirche vom Dorf zurücktragen. Was sich laut Antares im Sternzeichen des Skorpion als Leidenschaft, Vitalität oder Umwälzung darstellt, ist nämlich ein durch und durch kalkuliertes und arrangiertes Album mit vielen aufregenden Aspekten. Dargestellt ist die Vielfalt der unterschiedlichen Kulturzonen der Welt in einem kohärenten und stimmigen Konzept, es kommen zusammen: New York und Israel (Uri Gurvich), Berlin und Argentinien (Ramiro Olaciregui), Madrid, Spanien (Marcos Merino), Aalborg, Dänemark (Kenneth Dahl Knudsen), Los Angeles und Costa Rica (Rodolfo Zuniga).

Das ergibt ein Album mit Einflüssen weltweit, es leuchtet aus sich selbst heraus wie jener Stern, dem 16. hellsten Stern am Himmel von der Erde aus gesehen, der Stern nennt sich Roter Riese. Das Album selbst leuchtet wie ein Roter Riese, voll von Erlebnissen, voll von rumorenden Ansprüchen wie Widersprüchen, es eröffnet Räume, die die Bandmitglieder umfänglich mit ihrer Spiel- und Lebensfreude auszufüllen verstehen, so sehr, dass der Funke sofort überspringt und selbst nach mehrmaligem Hören nichts von seiner musikalischen Kompaktheit einbüßt – insofern ein großer Wurf und Erfahrungsbericht der fünf Musiker, die als Weltbürger und Vielreisende so einiges mitzuteilen wissen von der Grunderuption jeder Geschichte, die auch erst gelebt sein will, willst du von ihr berichten.

So gesehen ist die Welt des Jazz um die Erzählungen der World Citizen Band reicher und kann im Oktober live miterlebt werden in den unterschiedlichen Clubs, auch in Berlin, wo ihre Geschichte 2013 startete.

The album of 2019 entitled View of Tomorrow ventured a look into the future, the cover showed whirling hydrogen structures against a geometric background, the second album now, four years later, directs the view into space, Antares is the name of the star in the sign of Scorpio, the cover reveals something of a glowing and eruptive structure from the outside in, of implosion and disappearance from the inside out, a struggle of the elements for supremacy, endurance and survival. Thickly applied in each case in oil colors, what in View of Tomorrow still looked like land surveying or geometrization becomes in Antares the play of the elements within and around each other.

In order not to succumb too much to speculation or to get lost in it, I ask the musicians themselves what they had in mind under Antares, why now this rather apocalyptic picture, which in its depth of effect and coloration reminds one of the cover of Atomic Basie from 1957 – a similarly apocalyptic time. Now, when every now and then someone comes crawling out from behind his table and proposes the extinction of the world.

So much from the musicians about their music – I can take my Count Basie doomsday fantasy and apocalypse fear back to the church from the village. What, according to Antares in the zodiac sign of Scorpio, presents itself as passion, vitality or upheaval, is in fact a thoroughly calculated and arranged album with many exciting aspects. Depicted is the diversity of the different cultural zones of the world in a coherent concept, it comes together: New York and Israel (Uri Gurvich), Berlin and Argentina (Ramiro Olaciregui), Madrid, Spain (Marcos Merino), Aalborg, Denmark (Kenneth Dahl Knudsen), Los Angeles and Costa Rica (Rodolfo Zuniga).

This results in an album with influences worldwide, it shines out of itself like that star, the 16th brightest star in the sky seen from Earth, the star is called Red Giant. The album itself shines like a red giant, full of experiences, full of rumbling claims as well as contradictions, it opens up spaces that the band members know how to fill extensively with their joy of playing and living, so much so, that the spark immediately jumps over and even after repeated listening loses nothing of its musical compactness – in this respect a great throw and experience report of the five musicians, who as citizens of the world and as frequent travelers know so much to share about the basic eruption of every story, which also wants to be lived first, you want to tell about it.

In this sense, the world of jazz is richer by the stories of the World Citizen Band and can be experienced live in October in the various clubs, also in Berlin, where their story started in 2013.
