Geboren 1955 veröffentlichte Rich Perry allein bei SteepleChase 26 Aufnahmen, und zählt man die Aufnahmen unter seiner Mitwirkung hinzu, kommt man auf unzählige weitere Aufnahmen von Maria Schneider über Fred Hersch und Thad Jones bis John Fedchock oder Mareike Wiening, das scheint nicht mehr nur das Lebenswerk eines Einzelnen zu sein, sondern einer ganzen Stadt. Wie so häufig bekommen wir in D-Land von all solchen Geschichten kaum etwas mit und erst der Streaming Anbieter spielte mir die neueste Aufnahme aufs Ohr – und gleich blieb ich den ganzen Abend über am Set – und dachte für mich, fein fein noch feiner – eine ausdrucksstarke Saxophonstimme mit ausdrucksstarkem Pianisten und wunderbarer Begleitung am Bass und am Schlagzeug.

Beim besten Willen bin ich kein Fachmann für die Szene New Yorks, beim besten Willen aber vermute ich doch, dass es sich lohnt, hin und wieder dort hinzuschielen und einen Stopp zu setzen und sich darauf einzulassen und zu sehen oder zu hören, wie etwas in sich selbst begründet ist. Sie kennen sich, sie spielen schon über Jahre zusammen und jeder der hier beteiligten Akteure bringt noch einmal eine eigen Vita mit. Lesen konnte ich, dass es Rich Perry ist, der regelmäßig mit nur kleineren Ideen ums Eck kommt, und kaum dass Gary Versace davon Wind bekommt, wird daraus ein größeres Ding.

Ich könnte aus den Artikeln von Londonjazznews bis Downbeat zusammenkopieren, was geschrieben steht – bitte, lest selbst, die Links liegen unter den Aufnahmen vor – ich kann nur mein Erstaunen zum Ausdruck bringen, wie wenig von dem, was hier vorliegt, bisher an meine Ohren kam und das Wenige erst einmal wirken lassen und dabei umso erstaunter sein, wer noch alles in den Lebensläufen dieser Musiker in Erscheinung trat. Vorab die vier Aufnahmen der vier Giants und glücklich, wer das zu schätzen weiß. Die Quadratur des Kreises aus Vier mal Vier und alles beim Label mit der Vorliebe für eigenwilliges Internet-Understatement.

Born in 1955, Rich Perry released 26 recordings on SteepleChase alone, and if you add the recordings with his participation, you get an uncountable amount from Maria Schneider to Fred Hersch and Thad Jones to John Fedchock or Mareike Wiening, that seems to be no longer just the life’s work of one person, but of a whole city. As always, we in D-Land get little of all such stories and only the streaming provider played me the latest recording on the ear – and immediately I stayed the whole evening on the set – and thought to myself, fine fine even finer – an expressive saxophone voice with expressive pianist and wonderful accompaniment on bass and drums.

With the best will in the world I’m not an expert on the New York scene, but with the best will in the world I suspect that it’s worth squinting there now and then and making a stop, getting involved and seeing or hearing how something is grounded in itself. They know each other, they have been playing together for years and each of the players involved here once again brings his own resume. I could read that it is Rich Perry who regularly comes around the corner with just smaller ideas, and as soon as Gary Versace gets wind of it, it turns into a bigger thing.
