Mit MAETRIX hat Espen seinen Ruf gefestigt, eine Art von Musik zu erforschen, bei der komplexe Rhythmen mit starken, herzlichen Melodien gepaart werden. Der Name selbst kombiniert den Titel des Blockbuster-Films The Matrix von 1999 mit Metrik. Ähnlich wie im Film kann der Zuhörer wählen, welcher Realität er zuhören möchte, entweder intellektuell, indem er in das Mechanische und Konzeptuelle eintaucht, oder emotional, indem er sich von den Melodien und der Musik als Ganzes mitreißen lässt Liner Notes

Um es mit den Worten radiohoerers zu sagen: Es ist erstaunlich, wie es ihm (Espen Berg) gelungen ist, eine komplexe und dennoch gut hörbare Musik zu schaffen, die nie gefällig klingt und meisterhaft auf die einzelnen Musiker des Trondheim Jazz Orchestras abgestimmt ist. Oder auch : „Maetrix“ ist jedoch nicht nur eine beeindruckende Leistung, sondern auch unglaublich schöne Musik.

Mit eigenen Worten: was sich im gut 21 minütigen Eingangsstück Artemix + Cadae noch gemächlich konventionell wie BigBand anlässt, wird furios aufgelöst in asynchronen Bläserkaskaden mit höchstmöglicher Entladung. Um in XIII von Vibraphon und Vocal heruntergekühlt zu werden, das Solo auf dem Cello gleich auch unter Schub von Schlagzeug und Kontrabass gesetzt wird. Herskedals Tuba in Bolge spricht einmal mehr für sich. Die Abstimmung zwischen Bläsersatz und Tuba mit nahtlosem Übergang ins Meditative von Voice und Ensemble eröffnet eine große Bühne als Anleihe zum titelgebenden Film Matrix von 1999. Big, Very Big. Wo nun die Entscheidung ansteht, welcher Tonspur das Ohr folgen soll, setzt die innere Stimme auf bedingungsloses Drehbuch: das ganze Ding noch einmal und nochmal : radiohoerer : Ich habe aufgehört zu zählen, wie oft ich dieses Werk schon gehört habe und entdecke dabei immer wieder Neues, kurz: ein Traum!

With MAETRIX, Espen has solidified his call to explore a kind of music where complex rhythms are paired with strong, heartfelt melodies. The name itself combines the 1999 blockbuster movie title The Matrix, with metrics. Similar to the movie, the listener can choose which reality to listen to, either intellectually by diving into the mechanical and the conceptual, or emotionally by getting carried away by the melodies and the music as a whole. In the words of radiohoerer: ‘It’s amazing how he (Espen Berg) has managed to create a complex and yet easy to listen to music that never sounds pleasing and is masterfully harmonised with the individual musicians of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Or also: ‘Maetrix’ is not only an impressive achievement, but also incredibly beautiful music.

In my own words: what in the 21-minute opening piece Artemix + Cadae still sounds leisurely and conventional like a big band is furiously resolved in asynchronous wind cascades with the highest possible discharge of energie. To be cooled down in XIII by vibraphone and vocals, the solo on the cello is also immediately set under the thrust of drums and double bass. Herskedal’s tuba in Bolge once again speaks for itself. The coordination between the wind section and tuba with a seamless transition into the meditative voice and ensemble opens up another stage. In reference to the 1999 film Matrix. Big, Very Big.

Now that the decision has to be made as to which soundtrack the ear should follow, the inner voice relies on an unconditional script: the whole thing again and again : radiohoerer : I have stopped counting how many times I have listened to this work and keep discovering new things, in short: a dream!
