Der Winter war lang, wie jeder Winter, auch dieses Jahr. Wird Zeit, dass er geht, jetzt, sofort, und wir nicht mehr darüber nachdenken, wir haben Frühling, jetzt, endlich Frühling, worauf wartest du, raus aus den grauen Klamotten, den dunklen Gedanken, es ist Frühling, ja, und willst du wirklich noch wissen, wie sehr die Pandemie in ihnen festhängt, willst du noch weiter rumliegen und warten, dass dich jemand abholen kommt? Dann warte nicht zu lange, sondern hör dir einfach an, was dich erwartet. Die Türen öffnen sich, die Fenster, worauf warten?

Auf diese Band vielleicht. Eine neue junge und frische Stimme aus Dänemark, A Plane to Catch geben ihr Debut bei April Records aus Kopenhagen, das bläst gleich kräftig los in Shoot. Satte Bläser, feiner Groove. Die Aufnahme trägt den Namen “Moko Jumbie”. Das könnte ein Kompositum sein aus Moko=Gott und Jumbie, was einen Geist meint. Wikipedia erklärt es dir. Ein Moko Jumbi ist demnach ein auf Stelzen durchs Dorf ziehender Wahrsager.

Soweit die Anleihe aus der afrikanischen Folklore, die musikalischen Anleihen sind funkiger und souliger Natur und geben dieser der pulsierenden dänischen Jazzszene entstammenden Band einen kräftigen Schub an Lebensfreude und die begründete Hoffnung auf ein tanzfreudiges Publikum während ihrer Live-Konzerte mit auf den Weg. Wer die Trends der letzten Monate und Jahre aufspüren will, hier hast du einen davon: der Groove der Siebziger, der Wille zu unbeschwerter Bewegung, der freischwingende Beat, das geht zwangsläufig in die Hüfte und fordert zum Tanz.

Insofern. Die Band hat die pandemischen Monate und Jahre genutzt und gebündelt, um all das spürbar zu machen: den Spaß am Leben, die Freude unter Freunden, wir wollen nicht mehr liegen und sitzen, wir wollen uns bewegen, endlich, der Winter ist vorbei, genau die richtige Einladung – in Farbe.

Das Rezept ist so einfach wie überzeugend: Funk-, Reggae und Soulelemente mit kräftigen und groovigem Bass – das allein erzeugt mitreißenden Sound und lässt last but not least eine dritte Anleihe erinnern: der Name Mulatu Astatke steht für eine interessante Mischung aus lateinamerikanischen, jazzigen und äthiopischen Elementen, so schließt sich der Kreis.

Ein verspielt melodisches und traditionsbewusstes Arrangement. Eine junge Band aus Dänemark, die das Zeug dazu hat, so einige etwas hüftsteif Gewordene in Bewegung zu bringen. Da kannst du dich locker machen, ganz locker, und hoffentlich auch mal locker bleiben.

Winter was long, like every winter, also this year. About time it goes, now, right now, and we don’t think about it anymore, we have spring, now, finally spring, what are you waiting for, get out of the gray clothes, the dark thoughts, it’s spring, yes, and do you really still want to know how much the pandemic is stuck in them, do you want to keep lying around waiting for someone to come and get you? Then don’t wait too long, just listen to what awaits you. The doors open, the windows, what are you waiting for?

For this band, maybe. A new young and fresh voice from Denmark, A Plane to Catch make their debut on April Records from Copenhagen, this blows right away strong in Shoot. Lush horns, fine groove. The recording is called “Moko Jumbie”. That could be a compound of Moko=God and Jumbie, which means a ghost. Wikipedia explains. A Moko Jumbi is therefore a fortune teller who walks through the village on stilts.

So much for the borrowing from African folklore, the musical borrowings are funkier and soulier in nature, giving this band, which hails from the vibrant Danish jazz scene, a strong boost of joie de vivre and the well-founded hope of a dance-loving audience during their live concerts. If you want to track down the trends of the last months and years, here you have one of them: the groove of the seventies, the will for carefree movement, the free-swinging beat, that inevitably goes to the hips and calls for dancing.

In this respect. The band has used and bundled the pandemic months and years to make all this palpable: the fun of life, the joy among friends, we no longer want to lie and sit, we want to move, finally, the winter is over, just the right invitation – in color.

The recipe is as simple as it is convincing: funk-, reggae- and soul-elements with strong and groovy bass – that alone creates rousing sound and last but not least lets us remember a third borrowing: the name Mulatu Astatke stands for an interesting mixture of Latin American, jazzy and Ethiopian elements, so the circle closes.

A playful melodic and tradition-conscious arrangement. A young band from Denmark that has what it takes to get some who have become stiff in the hips moving. That’s where you can loosen up, holy loosen up, and hopefully stay loose for once.
