In der DownBeat-Ausgabe vom 23. November 1961 schrieb ein entsetzter Kritiker damals: “Im Renaissance Club in Hollywood hörte ich kürzlich eine erschreckende Demonstration dessen, was ein wachsender Anti-Jazz-Trend zu sein scheint, der von diesen führenden Vertretern [gemeint waren Coltrane und Dolphy] dessen, was als Avantgarde-Musik bezeichnet wird, exemplifiziert wird. […] Ich hörte, wie eine gute Rhythmusgruppe… hinter den nihilistischen Übungen der beiden Bläser verschwand… Coltrane und Dolphy scheinen darauf aus zu sein, den [Swing]… absichtlich zu zerstören. Sie scheinen es darauf anzulegen, einen anarchistischen Kurs in ihrer Musik zu verfolgen, den man nur als Anti-Jazz bezeichnen kann.” JazzEcho
In the November 23, 1961 issue of DownBeat, a horrified critic wrote at the time, „At the Renaissance Club in Hollywood recently I heard a startling demonstration of what seems to be a growing anti-jazz trend exemplified by these leading exponents [meaning Coltrane and Dolphy] of what is called avant-garde music. […] I heard a good rhythm section… disappear behind the nihilistic exercises of the two wind players… Coltrane and Dolphy seem bent on deliberately destroying [swing]…. They seem intent on pursuing an anarchistic course in their music that can only be called anti-jazz.“
