Myra Melford ist in Chicago aufgewachsen und studierte bis zum Abschluss 1981 am Evergreen State College Klavier und Komposition; ergänzend belegte sie Jazz am Cornish Institute in Seattle und Klavierpädagogik an der Manhattan School of Music. Daneben nahm sie Privatunterricht bei Jaki Byard, Henry Threadgill und Don Pullen. Nach ihrem Umzug nach New York City trat sie ab 1984 mit Butch Morris, Oliver Lake und Leroy Jenkins auf. 1986 kamen Soloauftritte hinzu.

Celebrating the life-giving power of light, the Lux Quartet is an exploratory new quartet co-led by two of the most celebrated and visionary artists in modern improvised music: pianist Myra Melford and drummer Allison Miller. Drawing on a shared passion for the preservation of nature and a boundary-stretching approach to music, the two innovative composers and bandleaders are joined by saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Scott Colley, together crafting a sonic environment that glows with its own intense yet nurturing radiance.

Melford and Miller have long embraced the natural world in their individual work. Melford often combines her passion for the outdoors with poetic and philosophical imagery in bands like Snowy Egret, Fire and Water or The Same River, Twice. Miller’s captivating work Rivers in Our Veins is a multi-media journey into the cultural and ecological life of rivers. The two have worked together for several years in the drummer’s ensemble Boom Tic Boom, a recent touring version of which also featured Stephens and Colley.

Both musicians are renowned for incisive playing across the entirety of the jazz spectrum. Dayna Stephens has worked with Kenny Barron, Ambrose Akinmusire, Julian Lage and Gerald Clayton, among others; while Scott Colley is a deeply respected bassist who has enjoyed extensive collaborations with Joshua Redman, John Scofield, Herbie Hancock and Chris Potter to name a few. The quartet developed such profound chemistry that it evolved into its own singular entity.

The name Lux Quartet was inspired by the role of light in the panoply of life on Earth, from the vitality of the sun’s ray to the bioluminescence of creatures in the deepest oceans – a suggestive indication of the heights and depths that the band endeavors to explore.

Das Lux Quartett, von zwei der bekanntesten und visionärsten Künstler der modernen improvisierten Musik geleitet, das sind die Pianistin Myra Melford und die Schlagzeugerin Allison Miller, feiert die lebensspendende Kraft des Lichts: die beiden innovativen Komponistinnen und Bandleaderinnen, die eine gemeinsame Leidenschaft für die Erhaltung der Natur und eine grenzüberschreitende Herangehensweise an die Musik verbindet, werden vom Saxophonisten Dayna Stephens und dem Bassisten Scott Colley unterstützt und schaffen gemeinsam eine Klangwelt, die durch ihre eigene intensive und zugleich nährende Ausstrahlung glänzt.

Melford und Miller haben sich in ihrer Arbeit schon lange mit der Natur auseinandergesetzt. Melford verbindet ihre Leidenschaft für die Natur oft mit poetischen und philosophischen Bildern in Bands wie Snowy Egret, Fire and Water oder The Same River, Twice. Millers fesselndes Werk Rivers in Our Veins ist eine multimediale Reise durch das kulturelle und ökologische Leben der Flüsse. Die beiden arbeiten seit mehreren Jahren im Schlagzeugensemble Boom Tic Boom zusammen, mit dem Stephens und Colley kürzlich auf Tournee waren.

Beide Musiker sind für ihr prägnantes Spiel über das gesamte Jazzspektrum hinweg bekannt. Dayna Stephens hat u. a. mit Kenny Barron, Ambrose Akinmusire, Julian Lage und Gerald Clayton zusammengearbeitet, während Scott Colley ein hoch angesehener Bassist ist, der u. a. mit Joshua Redman, John Scofield, Herbie Hancock und Chris Potter zusammengearbeitet hat.

Das Quartett entwickelte eine so tiefe Chemie, dass es sich zu einer eigenständigen Einheit entwickelte. Der Name Lux Quartet wurde von der Rolle des Lichts in der Vielfalt des Lebens auf der Erde inspiriert, von der Vitalität der Sonnenstrahlen bis zur Biolumineszenz der Lebewesen in den tiefsten Ozeanen – ein suggestiver Hinweis auf die Höhen und Tiefen, die die Band zu erforschen versucht.
