Das Marketing, ja, das Marketing … Mark Corroto von Allaboutjazz spricht von Glück, dass es im Bereich der kreativen Musik keine Produzenten oder Manager gibt, denn sonst wären Bernard & Custer ohne Job. Die Aussage kann nur Metapher oder Allegorie sein, ein Antagonismus – noch immer steht die Musik von Will Bernard und Beth Custer auf kreativen wie selbst- und eigenständigen Füßen, und zum Glück, ja zum Glück sind Manager nicht immer gleich Manager, manchmal sind sie sogar selbst musizierend, die beiden Bernard und Custer nämlich managen so einiges mehr, Will Bernard inzwischen zwölf eigene Aufnahmen plus mehr als 60 Aufnahmen als Sideman. Beth Custer kommt ebenfalls auf mehr als 20 Aufnahmen plus einige Publikationen und Filmmusiken. Und wie wir lesen: Bernard und Custer kennen sich schon fast vierzig Jahre und machen ebenso lange zusammen Musik.

Nun könnte man meinen, alte Freundschaften, und? Sie haben sich schon alles erzählt, kennen sich, grüßen sich, gehen ihrer Wege, und? Nichts und. Das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Wenn es Aufnahmen gibt, an die du nicht vorbeirennen solltest wie an deiner eigenen Geschichte, dann hast du hier ein ungleich aufregenderes Stück in der Hand oder am Ohr, es strotzt nur so von Ideen und Formen, es hört nicht auf, einen inneren Ton zu treffen.

Ob das an den Walzern liegt, am folkloristischen Schmuck oder am Blues, ob am sonoren Sound der Bassklarinette oder dem Falsett der Gesangsstimme, die Gitarre ist sich nicht zu schade, Saiten springen zu lassen oder sich nur assoziativ zu äußern wie im Eingangsstück Bear in Shamanic Transformation. Ein Kammermusikmoment in orchestraler Dissonanz folgt in Curve. Folkloristisches in Fence mit akustischer Gitarre. Ein Country-Evergreen wie von Ry Cooder ist zu hören in Glistering Spirit, was so viel heißt wie glitzernder Geist. Rhymes With Buster spielt die Kontroverse, Sky schließlich, das Titelstück, zieht am Taschentuch von Joni Mitchel, der Country-Slide an der Gitarre setzt sich noch einmal neben Ry Cooder.

The marketing, yes, the marketing, Mark Carotto of Allaboutjazz speaks of luck that in the field of creative music there are no producers or managers, because otherwise Bernard & Custer would be without a job. The statement can only be metaphor or allegory, an antagonism – still the music of Will Bernard and Beth Custer stands on creative as well as self and independent feet, and fortunately, yes fortunately managers are not always equal to managers, sometimes they are even making music themselves, the two Bernard and Custer namely manage so much more, Will Bernard meanwhile twelve own recordings plus more than 60 recordings as a sideman. Beth Custer also comes to more than 20 recordings plus some publications and film scores. And as we read: Bernard and Custer have known each other for almost forty years and have been making music together for just as long.

Now you might think, old friendships, so what? They have already told each other everything, know each other, greet each other, go their ways, and? Nothing and. The opposite is the case. If there are recordings you shouldn’t run past like your own story, here you have an incomparably more exciting piece in your hand or on your ear, it’s bursting with ideas and forms, it doesn’t stop hitting an inner note.

Whether that’s because of the waltzes, the folk jewelry or the blues, whether it’s the sonorous sound of the bass clarinet or the falsetto of the vocals, the guitar isn’t above letting strings jump or just expressing itself associatively as in the opening track Bear in Shamanic Transformation. A chamber music moment in orchestral dissonance follows in Curve. Folkloristic in Fence with acoustic guitar. A country evergreen as if by Ry Cooder is heard in Glistering Spirit. Rhymes With Buster plays the controversy, Sky, the title track, finally pulls on the handkerchief of Joni Mitchel, the country slide on the guitar once again sits next to Ry Cooder.
