Text Boulez Saal – In einer sehr persönlichen Ellington-Hommage präsentiert die Cellistin Tomeka Reid – an der Spitze eines Septetts, das auf das Klavier verzichtet – neue Kompositionen, die von den Werken des Altmeisters inspiriert sind. In der Tradition Ellingtons, Musiker:innen zusammenzubringen, die durch ihre individuellen Fähigkeiten unerwartete Klangwelten entstehen lassen, hat sie Kolleg:innen eingeladen, deren künstlerische Persönlichkeiten nicht nur im Jazz und in der Improvisation gleichermaßen zum Ausdruck kommen, sondern die außerdem eine tiefe Wertschätzung für Ellingtons Musik, sein Leben und sein Vermächtnis eint. Teile des Programms wurden vom Pierre Boulez Saal und vom John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington gemeinsam in Auftrag gegeben.

In a very personal homage to Ellington, cellist Tomeka Reid – at the head of a septet that dispenses with the piano – presents new compositions inspired by the works of the old master. In Ellington’s tradition of bringing together musicians who create unexpected worlds of sound through their individual skills, she has invited colleagues whose artistic personalities are not only expressed equally in jazz and improvisation, but who are also united by a deep appreciation of Ellington’s music, his life and his legacy. Parts of the program were jointly commissioned by the Pierre Boulez Saal and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.
