Hier Martin Fabricius, Vibraphonist und Filmkomponist, dort Randi Pontoppidan, Komponistin und Klangpoetin. Sie kennen sich seit 2016 von der Summer Session Jazz Denmark, sie haben eine Serie an Live-Auftritten zusammen ausgerichtet (ein Beispiel auf Youtube) und jeweils vielbeachtete Solokarrieren vorzuweisen – jetzt erscheint das Album Clouds als gemeinsame Referenz, ein künstlerisches und poetisches Werk mit großem Volumen. Wenn du nicht weißt, was unter Sternenzelt zu verstehen ist, hier bekommst du eine Ahnung davon. Wenn du nicht weißt, ob du geerdet genug bist, hier bekommst du ein Gespür für sakrale Räume, wenn du nicht weißt, was die Quadratur des Kreises ist, hier hörst du sie. Wenn du glaubst, dass das Berühren der Klangstäbe aus Metall hinreichen, um warmweichen oder nachhallenden Sound zu erzeugen, hier wandert, wabert, übertönt und verschmilzt er zu einer Mehrdeutigkeit von Sound. Wenn du sphärische Klänge im Akustischen wie Elektronischen vermutest, so bist du hier gut aufgehoben.

Hier wie dort wird nichts Geringeres als das Universum ausgemessen, in einem Studio, nicht im Gewölbe einer Kirche. Sie kennen sich seit 2016 und nahmen unter der Leitung von Jamaladeen Tacuma in jener Summer Session das Album “The Legend of the Pipe and Sweater“ auf. Seinerzeit genügten ein paar Gebrauchsgegenstände, um den Free Jazz zu erforschen mit Vibraphone (Fabricius), Stimme (Pontoppidan), Gitarre (Tacuma), Schlagwerk (Theil), Bass (Jefsen) und Trompete (Siversen). Gegenstände der Untersuchung waren Pfeife und Pullover.

Das wirkte insofern nach, als das nicht Erwartbare hinter jeder Faser lauert und jeder Gegenstand sich verändert in seiner Farbe bei jeweils anderem Licht, das lässt sich auch überprüfen im Zusammenwirken von Pontoppidan mit Greg Cohen am Bass in Space Georde – ihre Liebe zum Gestalten von Klängen, Melodien und Impulsen. Auch im Duo Randi Pontoppidan und Sissel Vera Pettersen greifen sie auf verschiedene Traditionen und Genres zurück, um eine eigenständige Klangwelt zu schaffen: Neugierig, suchend, meditativ. melodisch, rhythmisch, ambient und kraftvoll beschwörend.

In der Vorabmoderation zu Clouds heißt es: Der kreative Prozess des Duos hinter Clouds, einer Sammlung von elf verschiedenen Stücken, nahm eine Vielzahl von Formen an. Die Platte enthält mehrere ältere Kompositionen, die durch ausgiebige Live-Auftritte erprobt wurden, freie Improvisationen, die spontan entstanden sind, eine 12-Ton-Reihen-Komposition, die von Improvisationen im Stil Schönbergs begleitet wird, sowie mehrspurig produzierte Kompositionen, die durch Overdubs und Überlagerungen verbessert wurden. Martin Fabricius, ein Schüler von Gary Burton, erweiterte und erforschte den Einsatz von Elektronik, um sein eigenes Repertoire und die Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten seines Instruments zu erweitern. Auch er kommt auf eine lange Liste interessanter und erfolgreicher Aufnahmen. Alös Filmkomponist verfügt er außerdem über ein szenisches Auge und Gehör – das spürst du.

Hier wie dort – zwei die ihr Instrument beherrschen, hier die Schlagtechniken auf metallenen Klangstäben, dort die Höhen und Tiefen der eigenen Stimme. Gemeinsam schaffen sie Räume und eine Kunstmusik oder Kunst in der Musik, oder Kunst aus der Musik, sie kann man nicht kaufen als Alltagsgegenstand wie Pfeife oder Pullover, man kann sie trotzdem mit sich herumtragen, als gehörten sie zur eigenen und inneren Stimme, wer sich auf sie einlässt, wird mit der Zeit zum Teil der Musik – weit über die Adjektive: kontemplativ, besinnlich oder eindrücklich hinaus. Ein wolkig heiteres, ein stimmungsvolles Werk.

Here Martin Fabricius, vibraphonist and film composer, there Randi Pontoppidan, composer and sound poet. According to the pre-release presentation of Clouds, “A collection of eleven varied pieces, the duo’s creative process behind ‘Clouds’ took on a wide array of shapes. The record contains several older compositions tried and tested through extensive live performances, free improvisations done in the spur of the moment, a 12 tone row composition accompanied by improvisations in the style of Schoenberg, as well as multi-tracked produced compositions enhanced via overdubs and layering.” (jazzfuel)

Martin Fabricius, a student of Gary Burton, expanded and explored the use of electronics to extend his own repertoire and the expressive possibilities of his instrument.
