Den dunklen Grooves von Sun Don’t Shine über Cyclone zu Shadow steht das Keep Your Head Up gegenüber: es seien so gar keine Jazzelemente in dieser Musik – stopp, stopp, sage ich, das Ding ist voll aus dem Soul, der ist aus dem Blues, also voll aus den Roots – was willst du mehr – wenn eine Stimme so kräftig performt und dich aber locker macht: personal fav: shadows (in my dreams) – hat was, dachte ich im Sessel meiner gleitenden Seele
ein bisschen süffisant, nicht wahr, die Sache mit der Seele – schließlich haben es die Texte in sich, in der Promo heißt es: Das Album ist ein kraftvoller und introspektiver Blick auf die menschliche Zerbrechlichkeit und bewegt sich musikalisch auf der Grenze zwischen Soul, Jazz und Rock. Und nochmal die Promo: Die Band legt einen tieferen, fieseren Groove an den Tag, der zum Thema passt, und steigert sich zu einem Crescendo, während Wolfs Gesang von einem klagenden Schrei zu einem wütenden Schrei wird. Und das nennst du Sommermusik – da auch die Seelen glühen, die 70iger aufblühen und dir die Ambivalenz zwischen Ernsthaftigkeit und Feierlaune bauchig in die Beine fährt.

Der amerikanische Singer-Songwriter Wolfgang Valbrun tritt in die Fußstapfen der Größen der amerikanischen Soulmusik. Nachdem er als Teenager von New York nach Frankreich gezogen war, fand er in der Pariser Szene Anklang, bevor er als Leadsänger der britischen Avantgarde-Soul- und Jazzband Ephemerals angeworben wurde.
Mit Ephemerals tourte er durch die ganze Welt und gewann eine begeisterte Fangemeinde (und viele Millionen Streams). Neben ephemerals trat er auch für die französische Hip-Hop- und Soul-Legende GUTS auf und schrieb für sie, nachdem er sie zufällig getroffen hatte, als sie auf der gleichen Bühne in Glastonbury spielten.
Das Jahr 2020 brachte für Wolfgang eine musikalische Neuausrichtung und er entschied sich, unter seinem eigenen Namen zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Nach der Veröffentlichung seines Debüts Love Yourself EP“ im Spätsommer 2023, das u.a. von BBC 6 Music und KCRW unterstützt wurde, legte Wolfgang mit Almighty $$“ nach und heizte damit die Stimmung für die Veröffentlichung seines Debütalbums Flawed By Design“ im Sommer an.

now say, good is what reaches you, catches you and takes away – say it as simply as possible – we are facing a hot summer, possibly one of the hottest summers since temperatures have been measured: and say: you wanted the summer – because of the living is easy – it needed, was so, soul from the portable radio by the lake – Wolfgang Valbrun is played up and down on the BBC: summer is within reach – Flawed by Design means flawed design, we have allusions like this in abundance, Where is The Peace in reference to the riots in France and the hostility of the authorities towards minorities, this is a protest song against institutional racism. The dark grooves of Sun Don’t Shine, Cyclone and Shadow are contrasted with Keep Your Head Up: there are no jazz elements in this music – stop, stop, I say, this thing is all soul, it’s all blues, so it’s all roots – what more could you want – when a voice performs so powerfully and makes you feel relaxed: personal fav: shadows (in my dreams) – it’s got something, I thought, armchair of my gliding soul
a bit smug, isn’t it, the soul thing – after all, the lyrics have it in them, the promo says: “The album is a powerful and introspective look at human fragility and musically straddles the line between soul, jazz and rock. And the promo again: the band lays down a deeper, nastier groove to match the theme, building to a crescendo as Wolf’s vocals turn from a plaintive cry to an angry scream. And that’s what you call summer music – as souls glow, the 70s blossom and the ambivalence between seriousness and party mood drives belly-deep into your legs.
About Flawed by Design
The American singer-songwriter Wolfgang Valbrun is following in the footsteps of the greats of American soul music. After moving from New York to France as a teenager, he found a following on the Parisian scene before being recruited as lead singer of the British avant-garde soul and jazz band Ephemerals.
He toured the world with Ephemerals, gaining an enthusiastic fan base (and many millions of streams). Alongside ephemerals, he also performed and wrote for French hip-hop and soul legends GUTS after meeting them by chance when they played the same stage at Glastonbury.
The year 2020 brought a new musical direction for Wolfgang and he decided to write and record under his own name. Following the release of his debut ‚Love Yourself EP‘ in late summer 2023, which was supported by BBC 6 Music and KCRW amongst others, Wolfgang followed it up with ‚Almighty $$‘, setting the mood for the release of his debut album ‚Flawed By Design‘ in the summer.
