Die Jazzgitarre. Wie leben. Wie setzen. Wo anfangen. Die erste Gitarre ist wahrscheinlich eine akustische, du hast die Wahl: zwischen Western-, Flamenco oder Konzertgitarre, es folgt der Blues, ein erster John Lee Hooker oder ein Muddy Waters, das alles nach Gehör, oder abgeguckt von Freunden, herbeizitiert aus Heften. Dem Blues folgt der Frust, weil sich nichts so anhört wie die dort auf der LP.
Es werden die Stilrichtungen bekannt. Ganz vorn steht so etwas wie Howlin Wolf, oder eben John Lee Hooker, (Pech für dich: du kannst nicht singen). Du hörst das Swingen bei Django Reinhardt, das Fließende bei Charlie Christian, das Groovige von Joe Pass, das Funkige bei George Benson, und stocherst selbst im Quintenzirkel herum, hast weder Rhythmus- noch Harmoniegefühl.
Es folgt die Differenz, du willst eine klassische Gitarre und dich in Notenlinien absichern. Du willst die einfachen Bluesriffs und schaffst es sogar, sie Killer Blues Bar zu nennen und als solche bei jeder Gelegenheit zu zitieren. Du hörst das erste Mal Carlos Santana und willst eine E-Gitarre.
Gleich hörst du John McLaughlin und glaubst, Gitarre spielen bedeutet Fingerfertigkeit. Du holst dir ein Lehrbuch von Joe Pass und bereicherst deine Bluesakkorde um Chromatisches. Du hörst Pat Metheny und weißt, das schaffst du nie. Bei Eric Clapton fühlst du dich geborgen, ohne zu wissen, dass auch er auf höchstem Niveau spielt, so leicht.
Säulenheilige entstehen: jeweils erkennbar in ihrem Sound: DER Wes Montgomery, DER Joe Pass, DER Pat Metheny, DER John Scofield, DER Eric Clapton, DER Bill Frisell, du hast noch nicht einmal gefragt, wo ist DIE Gitarristin. Noch keine Mary Osborne gehört, keine Emily Remler, keine Sister Rosetta Tharp, keine Memphis Minnie, wer war gleich Elizabeth Cotten, wer Susan Tedesci?*
Es folgen die Modernisten um Ben Monder, Nir Felder, Wolfgang Muthspiel. Michael Sagmeister macht den Lehrer. Du lernst Hedvig Molestad kennen, hörst Samantha Fisch und Debbie Davis – und wo bleibst du?
Du hast die Wahl, du darfst alles versuchen, es wird sich erweisen: Rhythmus- und Harmonieempfinden entscheiden über deine Zuordnungen und weniger, welches WahWah Pedal oder welche Rückkopplung oder welcher Verstärker. Es muss dir klar werden: Gitarre lernst du am besten auf der Akustischen. Das musst und darfst du erst mal draufhaben!
Du spielst dich durchs Real Book und suchst Partner.

The jazz guitar. How to live. How to set. Where to start. The first guitar is probably an acoustic one, you have the choice: between western flamenco or concert guitar, the blues follows, a first John Lee Hooker or a Muddy Waters, all that by ear, or copied from friends, quoted from booklets. The blues is followed by frustration, because nothing sounds like the ones on the LP.
The styles become known. Right in front is something like Howlin Wolf, or John Lee Hooker, (bad luck for you: you can’t sing). You hear the swinging of Django Reinhardt, the flowing of Charlie Christian, the groovy of Joe Pass, the funky of George Benson, and poke around in the circle of fifths yourself, having neither a sense of rhythm nor harmony.
The difference follows, you want a classical guitar and to cover yourself in staves. You want the simple blues riffs and even manage to call them killer blues bar and quote them as such at every opportunity. You hear Carlos Santana for the first time and want an electric guitar.
In a moment you hear John Mc Laughlin and think playing guitar means dexterity. You pick up a textbook by Joe Pass and add chromaticism to your blues chords. You listen to Pat Metheny and know you’ll never make it. With Eric Clapton you feel safe, not knowing that he too plays at the highest level, so easily.
Pillar saints emerge: each recognizable in their sound: THE Wes Montgomery, THE Joe Pass, THE Pat Metheny, THE John Scofield, THE Eric Clapton, THE Bill Frisell, you haven’t even asked where is THE guitarist. No Mary Osborne heard yet, no Emily Remler, no Sister Rosetta Tharp, no Memphis Minnie, who was Elizabeth Cotten right away, who Susan Tedesci?
The modernists around Ben Monder, Nir Felder, Wolfgang Muthspiel follow. Michael Sagmeister makes the teacher. You meet Hedvig Molestad, listen to Samantha Fisch and Debbie Davis – and where are you?
You have the choice, you may try everything, it will turn out one thing above all, rhythm and harmony feeling decide your assignments and less, which WahWah pedal or which feedback or which amplifier. It must become clear to you: You learn guitar best on the acoustic. You must and may have that first of all on it!
And then you play through the Real Book and look for partners.
