Die ersten zwei Wochen des Jahres wartest du auf Neuerscheinungen, in der dritten Woche dann: ein Album, das begeistert aufgenommen wird – für John Fordham beim Guardian ist es schlicht ein großartiges 8 teiliges Set, für Mike Jurkovic von Allaboutjazz ist die Aufnahme berauschend, befreiend! Für Doug Collette, ebenfalls von Allaboutjazz, ist die Aufnahme ein Werk von ungewöhnlicher Intelligenz und vielschichtiger Nuancierung. Für Chris Ingalis von Pop Matters stellt die Aufnahme ein zutiefst befriedigendes Beispiel dar für ein Sextett, das auf allen Zylindern läuft. Für Thom Jurek von Allmusic ist die Zärtlichkeit in der Konversation zwischen Gitarrentrillern und Bläsern atemberaubend – fast filmisch. Für Lottie Brazier beim Quiteus ist Cloudward ein großartiges Album für einen Stadtspaziergang.

Du wartest zwei Wochen auf die erste Aufnahmen und wirst in der dritten Woche überrascht – nicht so sehr davon, dass, wo Mary Halvorson draufsteht, auch Mary Halvorson drin ist, sondern vom Zusammenwirken der in sich kohärenten und stimmigen und kommunikativen Band, das konnte ich neulich erst hören: es gibt nichts Schöneres als kontinuierlich und konstant in einer Band zu spielen – wo sie sich kennen und wo sie miteinander “reden”. Die gleiche Zusammensetzung wie in Amaryllis – dem Album von 2022, noch unter Covid-Vorzeichen entstanden.

Schon da ein überzeugendes Zusammenwirken von Posaune, Trompete, Vibraphone, Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug, mit einprägsamen und zugänglichen Melodien – schon dort: viele Freiräume für aufregende Soli. Schon da eine großer Spaß am Arrangement. Schon da ein erstaunliches In- und Umeinander der Instrumente.

Es fehlen noch die Hinweise auf Belladonna, ebenfalls in 2022 erschienen, ein Doppeldebut beim Label Nonesuch – mit The Mivos Quartet – als kammermusikalisches Streicherensemble sorgt es in Amaryllis und Belladonna für einen eigenen und der Gitarre Halvorsons adäquaten Raum – die Hinweise auf ihre anderen Alben von Dragon’s Head bis John Zorn’s Bagatelles – die Hinweise auf ihre Zusammenarbeiten mit Thumbscrew oder Sylvie Courvoisier – die Hinweise auf ihre Arbeit als Side-Woman mit u.a. Nate Wooley, Tomas Fujiwara, Tom Rainey oder Ingrid Laubrock.

Ein mehr als überzeugendes Gesamtwerk bis dato – die Vergleiche führen auf sie zurück, unverkennbar im Original ihres Instruments und unverkennbar in Konzentration und Intensität ihrer Ausarbeitungen. Was eben auch überrascht: In Cloudware sucht sie nicht sich als Mittelpunkt, sondern bringt sich ein in eine Konstellation mit Musizierenden, die sich gegenseitig stimulieren und ebenfalls über sich selbst hinaus weisen.

Genug der Superlative. Hören Sie selbst. Die Ausnahmegittaristin Mary Halvorson legt im Sextett ihrer Ausnahmebegleitung ein weiteres Ausnahmealbum vor, das signifikant leuchtet und weit mehr ist als ein Album für Brooklyn basierte Avantgarde – es gibt der Musik insgesamt Grund und Impuls und stimmt optimistisch, dass noch einiges an Entdeckungsreisen bevorsteht.

The first two weeks of the year you wait for new releases, then in the third week: an album that is enthusiastically received – for John Fordham at the Guardian it is simply a great 8-piece set, for Mike Jurkovic from Allaboutjazz the recording is exhilarating! It is liberating! For Doug Collette, also of Allaboutjazz, the recording applies the finishing touch on an effort of uncommon intelligence and multi-levelled nuance. For Chris Ingalis of Pop Matters, the recording is a shimmering, deeply satisfying example of a jazz sextet firing on all cylinders. For Thom Jurek of Allmusic , The tenderness in conversation between guitar trills and brass is breathtaking – nearly cinematic. For Lottie Brazier at Quiteus, Cloudward makes for a great city walking album.

You wait two weeks for the first recording and are surprised in the third week – not so much by the fact that if it says Mary Halvorson on it, it’s Mary Halvorson in it, but by the coherent and communicative band that I could hear the other day: there’s nothing better than playing continuously and constantly in a band – where they know each other and where they “talk” to each other. The same line-up as in Amaryllis – the album from 2022, which was still created under Covid conditions.

A convincing interplay of trombone, trumpet, vibraphone, guitar, bass and drums, with catchy and accessible melodies – already there: plenty of scope for exciting solos. Already there: great fun with the arrangement. An astonishing interplay between the instruments.

The references to Belladonna are still missing, also released in 2022, a double debut on the Nonesuch label – with The Mivos Quartet – as a chamber music string ensemble, it provides its own space in Amaryllis and Belladonna that is adequate for Halvorson’s guitar – the references to her other albums from Dragon’s Head to John Zorn’s Bagatelles – the references to her collaborations with Thumbscrew or Sylvie Courvoisier – the references to her work as a side woman with Nate Wooley, Tomas Fujiwara, Tom Rainey or Ingrid Laubrock, among others.

A now more than convincing overall work – the comparisons with others can be traced back to herself, unmistakably in the original of her instrument and unmistakably in the concentration and intensity of her arrangements. And what is also surprising is that in Cloudware she does not seek herself out as the centre of attention, but rather brings herself into a constellation of musicians who stimulate each other and also point beyond themselves – enough of the superlatives. Listen for yourself. The exceptional gittarist Mary Halvorson presents another exceptional album in the sextet of her exceptional accompaniment that shines significantly and is far more than an album for Brooklyn-based Avantgarde – it gives the music as a whole reason and impetus and makes us optimistic that there are still some journeys of discovery to come.
