Die USA – nichts als aufregend – in unserem Sinn diesmal auf erfreuliche Art. Soviel an Jazz, es kann vom Jazz nicht genug geben: du hast die Auswahl und sitzt gleich auch vor einem überfüllten Teller und schaust um dich, was die anderen so vor sich haben.

Wir haben es in unseren Breiten zur Gewohnheit gemacht, Amerika skeptisch zu sehen, das speist sich aus Vorurteilen, dabei wird gern ausgeblendet, dass sie in den USA selbst sehr viel näher an diesen Phänomenen dran sind und nicht weniger gefordert.

Einerseits die Übermacht aus dem Silicon Valley, andererseits die Ballung der Kultur in den Big Cities bei Zurückstellung des Landlebens. Einerseits das Wiedererstarken des Patriotismus, andererseits die Fragen nach Vielfalt, Diversität. Einerseits die überzogenen Börsenkurse, andererseits die Verteuerung der Energiepreise und Lebenshaltungskosten für alle bei gleichbleibendem Lohn und nicht abgesichertem Status.

Einerseits Hard-Core, andererseits Softball. Einerseits Pop, andererseits Trash. Hier das Rock Cafe dort der Jazzclub.

Die Spreizungen der Themen sind in ihren Ausreizungen nirgends besser abzulesen als in der unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmung der gleichen Sache auf den Sendern von Fox und CNN; beide klagen für sich ein, die Waagschale besser auszutarieren.

Einerseits der National Book Award, andererseits Bob Dylan. Einerseits Foster Wallace andererseits Dan Brown. Einerseits George Gershwin andererseits Roscoe Mitchell. Einerseits Fusionjazz andererseits Lincoln Institut. Einerseits Akademie andererseits Straßenlärm. Die Widersprüche sind enorm und doch einfach gelöst scheinbar: Republikaner versus Demokraten. Rechts Links. Gut Böse. Je nach dem, auf welcher Seite du stehst, ist die Moral auf der Gegenseite.

Aus all den Klischees und Filmen in meinem Kopf haben sich weitere Spangen eröffnet: Ost West Nord Süd. Los Angeles New York. New Orleans Chicago. Breaking Bad und Better Call Saul. Da ist Wim Wenders mit Ry Cooder. Da ist Jim Jarmusch mit John Lurie. Da ist DaimlerChrysler FiatFord. Da ist das Kartellamt FB – nennt sich jetzt Meta. Und die anderen heißen Alpha. Wer zuerst kommt und schön dass wir noch musizieren dürfen.

Die USA ist mit einer Bevölkerung von 330 Millionen ungefähr so aufgestellt wie die Eurozone mit 340 Millionen (EU: 440 Mio), hat aber einen anderen Dichtekoeffizienten. Die von mir gesichteten Jazzerinnen kommen zu nicht unerheblichem Teil aus New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Detroit. NY und Angeles sind dabei die bei weitem größten Agglomerationen, in der Größenordnung haben wir in Europa London und Moskau.

Zum Vergleich: Dänemark hat ca. 6 Millionen Einwohnerinnen gesamt, Schweden 10 Millionen, Finnland 5.5 und Österreich ca. 9 Millionen, die Schweiz 8,7 Millionen. Zusammen: 40 Millionen. Die Städte New York Los Angeles Chicago und Bosten kommen insgesamt auf 40 Millionen. Das sagt Folgendes aus:

Im Verhältnis zueinander haben die einzelnen Großstädte der USA einen wesentlich höheren Ausstoß an Jazz als europaweit die Länder. Jazz ist City. Das kann man so behaupten oder stehenlassen.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit ergibt sich über die Klassifizierung der Instrumente, würde aber allein an der Anzahl der Saxophonistinnen oder Pianistinnen an sich selbst scheitern. Ein großes Poster könnte helfen: 20 mal 100 macht 200 – wer will das alles hören? Außerdem würde es nicht hinreichen. Ich habe allein für New York mehr als 200 Neuerscheinungen.

Ich könnte alle Zeitungen abgrasen und eine Schnittmenge bilden; dabei kämen, soviel sei verraten, all diese Namen zum Vorschein: Schnittmenge aus Jazzwise … New York Times … Jazz Times … Allaboutjazz (das sind gleich mal 13 Best of 2021, auch einschränkbar auf meist gelesene Artikel). Plus Jazzweek.

Du siehst, es ist schier unmöglich, den Jazz der USA in irgendeinen Koffer zu packen und damit über die Ostsee zu schippern. Was den Jazz angeht, möchtest du als Old Europe trotzdem zugegriffen haben und den Moment miterleben, da wieder ein Kamasi Washington ausgerufen wird, der dieses Jahr James Francies heißt, obwohl er kurz davor ist, von James Brandon Lewis abgelöst zu werden.

Who comes first and nice that we are still allowed to make music.
