Alben des Monats: Nicola Caminiti Vivid Tales of a Blurry Self-Portrait ... – Dayna Stephens Closer Than We Think

Bitte?

Since I have been told that jazz is sufficiently represented, I am all the more astonished to hear from other quarters: how can jazz gain in perception and visibility? Here the assumption that jazz needs an audience, there the assumption that it can manage without an audience and without advocacy. One wishes for foresight, openness and a voice in this matter, all the more astonishing as some believe they have to defend something they don’t miss at all, while others tackle or attack something that doesn’t bother or affect them at all. Fortunately, some questions and comments are no longer necessary, just as they came up. But it is obvious that the big redistribution is imminent, the subsidy watering cans are being taken to the sheds, those with the megaphone get more, those with an open hand have to shout and clench their fists. It’s already a shame how the wind is whistling around the houses. There will be people who dispute the existence of others, there will be those who laugh up their sleeves, there will be people to mourn as disappeared and not even missing, those who have taken precautions will survive, there will be a few more posters pinned to the walls, the complaints will spread but not contribute to the development, there is a threat of existential fear.

But you can’t talk about it, because I’m fine, thank you. [as in Alphaville by Godard] What about the music? Everything’s fine, please thank you, as long as you stick to those who are still on the big side. I’m not used to being asked harmless questions that are proportionally harsh, but then I see and hear people who think they only work for the good guys. Who are the good guys, please, who are the non-good guys, please thank you, I’m fine, I hope you are too. That’s the kind of good guy who only works for the good guys. I ask, and where is the art? He answers: Art, what kind? Aha, I thought, someone who likes to ride along when others pay. Someone who listens to jazz when he has to. The question again: what comes after the rain, what comes after the earthquake, what comes after what’s left when there’s nothing left of the cake you’re eating. Please? This is getting too complicated for me, he said. Me: Fortunately, we don’t agree on that for once. So let me remind you again: You’re eating the cake I’ve brought and I’m starting to wonder why I always bring the cake and what happens if I don’t bring any more cake. And so on. The main thing is that it tastes good.

Sad News by The Free Jazz CollectiveCleanfead Records would be shutting down at the end of the year

Dear readers, in case you are wondering about the focus on Clean Feed this week, let me briefly explain. Earlier this year, we were shocked to see a message from Clean Feed head Pedro Costa announcing that after over 20 years it was likely that the label would be shutting down at the end of the year. Contemplating this bleak news, we felt we needed to do something.

Lee Rice Epstein Beyond Borders: Some Thoughts About Clean Feed Records :

As we know from copious amounts of data analysis, streaming is a disaster for independent musicians and labels, a (sometimes) necessary evil for labels and artists to try and procure some attention from the PR noise that threatens to bury their signal. Cases in point, pillars of the Clean Feed roster like Luís Lopes, Gonçalo Almeida, Sei Miguel, Martin Küchen, Susana Santos Silva, André Roligheten, and Eve Risser—each of whom is well established and respected in European circles—can scarcely get the attention of US audiences and critics.

I can confirm that there are simply no visits to verhoovensjazz at night, which means that while Europe is asleep between 23:00 and 8:00 CET, America is active – according to Wikipedia, a good 1 billion people live in South and North America – which means that the search engines do not transport bilaterally from the USA to Europe and from Europe to the USA, but unilaterally from the USA to Europe. This means that the entire American market remains virtually closed to European jazz products. This also means that we see what America delivers, from Blue Note to Sunnyside – they hardly see anything of significance in Europe. [This also applies to the reception level] But Clean Feed Records are very important in terms of the content and quality of their products

Lee Rice Epstein Beyond Borders: Some Thoughts About Clean Feed Records :
